Marine Corps Reserves Captain, Jeremy Henwood was deployed to one of the most dangerous regions in Afghanistan, where Taliban fighters use roadside bombs and snipers to kill or maim American troops. Dozens of Marines were killed and hundreds were grievously wounded during his tour. But Henwood, 34, came home safely. He was pleased to return to his job with the San Diego Police Department. He was assigned to patrol a neighborhood that, like much of San Diego, is experiencing a drop in crime. Henwood’s car was stopped at a stop sign, when the driver of a black Audi signaled with his lights. The driver then pulled alongside the police car, lowered his front passenger window, leveled a shotgun and fired, striking the officer’s head. The driver of the car, Dejon Marquee White, 23, had just left a shooting minutes earlier in a fast-food parking lot. Within one hour, witnesses’ descriptions of the gunman and the Audi helped officers locate the shooter. When he reached for a shotgun, several officers opened fire, killing him. At his apartment they found a rambling, semi-coherent suicide note apparently written by Dejon White.
